The Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys Temminckii) is a large, freshwater turtle found in North America. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection.

Description[]

The Alligator Snapping Turtle is a Southeast North American freshwater turtle species. It is the largest freshwater turtle in North America and lies at the bottom of lakes or rivers waiting for food to come to it, using its tongue as a lure to draw prey before clamping its jaws shut with enough force to crush bone. While the alligator snapping turtle is primarily carnivorous, it will also eat aquatic vegetation as well as insects, fish, mollusks, small mammals, snakes, frogs and other turtles. They can be kept in captivity and have a lifespan of about 45 years in the wild. It is believed that alligator snapping turtles on average live for about 80–120 years In captivity, claims of 200 year old alligator snapping turtles have been made, but are currently unproven. Alligator snapping turtles are extremely dangerous if not handled properly, and have enough bite-force to bite off a human finger if provoked, though this rarely happens as most bites are warning bites that don't use the turtle's full jaw strength, but the bite can still do a lot of damage.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a North American animal, the game mentions that this animal is "specific to South America". This oddity is shared with the Gila Monster and the Malayan Tapir.
    • This is because the Content Box is used to let the player know if an animal is part of the original Zoo Tycoon (Xbox), DLC, or part of Ultimate Animal Collection. Those belonging to Ultimate Animal Collection being labelled as "specific to South America" or "specific to Australia".
  • Unusually, this animal is placed in a mini-exhibit without any water bodies, despite being highly adapted for an aquatic environment.
  • The Alligator Snapping Turtle is categorized as a tortoise, despite being a freshwater turtle.
