The American Beaver (Castor canadensis) is a large North American rodent. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The American beaver is one of two species of beaver, the other being the similarly-sized Eurasian beaver, and the two species represent the second-largest member of the rodent family after the Capybara. It can reach a body length of 90cm (35in) with a 35cm (13.8in) paddle-shaped tail and can weigh up to 50kg (110lbs). Beavers are semi-aquatic, using their tails and webbed hind feet to swim. Its small ears and nostrils can close whilst the beaver is swimming underwater.

American beavers are found across the United States and Canada. Largely nocturnal, they are herbivorous with a preference for herbaceous and woody plants. Beavers are best known for build lodges and dams, which they create by cutting down trees using their large and continuously-growing incisors, whilst also using twigs, rocks and mud as extra building materials. The lodge acts as a shelter, whilst the dam is used to create a pool of deep water so the beaver can escape from predators. Beavers help to shape their environment by cutting down trees and building dams, and are therefore considered a keystone species.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The American beaver is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 3 stars.

Habitat[]

The American beaver needs an exhibit that contains a lot of water. They prefer the wetlands biome, but will also do well in Temperate Forest, Savannah, and Scrub biomes (as well as grassland, boreal forest, and desert to a lesser extent).

Diet[]

American beavers are herbivores that eat branches, roots, and lettuce.

Enrichment[]

The only enrichment item for the beaver is the pile of branches. They will use these branches to construct a shelter.

Shelter[]

Unlike other animals in Zoo Tycoon 2, the beaver will build its own shelter using branches to create a lodge.

Behavior[]

American beavers are monogamous; they have a single mate for life. They have litters of 1-2 kits.

zootycoon.com Description
The American beaver is a large, semi-aquatic rodent. Beavers are known for building dams, which produce a small pond that helps conserve water, maintain water flow, and increase the biological diversity of the surrounding area. Beavers are sometimes dropped by parachute into remote areas to build dams and reduce erosion in rivers.
