The American Bison (Bison bison) is a bovid native to North America. It is available in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
The American Bison is the largest and heaviest extant land mammal in North America. Closely related to cattle, it can be easily identified by its large head, shoulder hump and stocky front legs, all of which have a thicker coat than their less-muscled hindquarters. Males are larger than females and can weigh over 900 kg (over 2000 lbs), although heavier individuals have been known. Bison are herbivores, grazing on grass and devoting time to rest before moving on to a new grazing pasture.
American bison once roamed across North America, living in large herds that roamed across the prairie grasslands, scrubland areas and river valleys. Although they were nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century, the species was reintroduced to protected areas across Canada and the USA. The species has also been introduced to Mexico and Yakutia, Russia.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The American bison is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it is not obtainable until June 1. It is also adoptable in the Seasideville Zoo scenario.
The American bison is a Grassland animal. It is very simple to keep, as its only other terrain requirement includes some fresh water, and it requires little foliage or rocks.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The American bison is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2. It was added as part of the Endangered Species expansion pack and is one of the first animals available in Campaign and Challenge mode.
As in the previous game, the American bison is a Grassland animal and has little shelter or enrichment requirements.

Until the 19th century, as many as 60 million bison lived on the Great Plains from Mexico into Canada. From 1830 to 1889, methodical destruction by settlers, for sport and for hides, reduced this number to less than 1000. Today more than 200,000 bison live in protected areas and on private ranches. |
