The American Mastodon (Mammut americanum) is a large North American mammal. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The American mastodon is one of the youngest and best known of five species of mastodon that lived primarily in North America from the early Pliocene to the late Pleistocene. A distant cousin of modern elephants and mammoths, a large male American mastodon could reach up to 2.8m (9.2ft) tall at the shoulder and weigh 7.8 tonnes, although larger individuals have been identified. Males were larger than females and their large tusks (up to 5m in some individuals) were longer and had a more pronounced curve. The species is often depicted with a coat of thick hair similar to the Woolly Mammoth, but there is little evidence for this and its lifestyle suggests it was not as hairy.

The American mastodon had a wide range across North America, from as far north as Alaska to as far south as Honduras. Like all mastodons, it is believed to have lived in forested regions and would have primarily browsed for food, although it would still have eaten grass. Like modern elephants, evidence suggests that mastodons would have lived in herds. The American mastodon became extinct around 11,000 years ago, possibly due to a combination of climate changes and overhunting by humans.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The American mastodon is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Extinct Animals expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 4.5 stars.

The American mastodon is a Boreal Forest animal. Like all extinct boreal forest animals, it requires a Glacier in its exhibit to be fully comfortable.

zootycoon.com Description
The American mastodon—with its shaggy brown coat, stocky legs, huge head, and flexible trunk—roamed the spruce forests of North America, especially the northeastern and Great Lakes regions of the United States, until about 12,000 years ago. It used its nearly horizontal tusks to break tree branches, and its conical-shaped teeth were adept at chewing the tough leaves that were a central part of its diet.
