The Asian Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus), also known as the Asiatic Black Bear, Moon Bear and White-Chested Bear, is a large Asian carnivorous mammal. It is an adoptable animal in all three mainline Zoo Tycoon games.

Description[]

The Asiatic black bear is a medium-sized member of the bear family, with males weighing up to 200kg (440lbs) and females being smaller at 125kg (276lb). Aside from its thick black fur, one of its most distinguishing features is the large crescent-shaped white marking on its chest, giving it the alternative name of Moon bear. It is largely an arboreal species and has a powerful upper body and strong hooked front claws, compared to comparatively weaker back legs. Most Asiatic black bears also have a thicker layer of fur around their necks.

There are seven subspecies of Asiatic black bear living in varied habitats across South and Central Asia, although it typically has a preference for deciduous forests. Like most bears, it is omnivorous, eating plants, fruit, insects and occasionally small animals. As with all bears, individuals lead solitary lives and adults come together only to mate. Although there is no definitive estimate on the number of wild Asiatic black bears, it is threatened through habitat loss, hunting and capture for the harvesting of their bile.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The Asian Black Bear is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon. It is a downloadable animal.

The Asian black bear is a Highland animal and requires gray stone, snow and coniferous forest floor in its habitat. Its favorite foliage is the Himalayan Pine Tree and, like all highland animals, it requires substantial elevation.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The Asiatic black bear is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2. It is not included in the base game, but instead it once was accessible by getting all of the Photo Objectives in Zoo Tycoon 2: Mobile, where it once could be downloaded to the PC version. However, this method of obtaining the bear is no longer possible due to the original Zoo Tycoon Website shutting down. Instead, the Asiatic black bear can now only be obtained by finding a download, as it was not included in the Ultimate Collection.

In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is adoptable when a zoo reaches a rating of 2-stars.

The Asiatic black bear is a Temperate Forest animal, but can tolerate Boreal Forest as well as alpine and grassland to a lesser extent. The Asiatic black bear can use a variety of enrichment items including several balls, the plastic barrel, car tire, bone, ice blocks and heated rock. The shelters they can use are also diverse, including the small wooden shelter, the concrete shelters, caves, cubbing den, raised sleeping platform and the hollow tree stump.

Trivia[]

  • In Zoo Tycoon, the information plaque shows the Asian Black Bear in the coniferous forest biome, despite being a highland animal.
  • The Zoo Tycoon 2 version of the Asiatic Black Bear was never updated to changes made in Endangered Species or African Adventure. This causes the following discrepancies:
    • The conservation status being absent from gameplay (aside from being mentioned in the Zoopedia).
    • Mates do not register to a family tree. In addition, cubs don't list the father, making them able to fight and kill each other as they are considered unrelated animals.
    • Adults are unable to attack any prey animals and cannot be hunted by larger predators like Tyrannosaurus rex. Additionally, young can't be hunted by anything.
    • The animal may have issues using some food containers, enrichment objects, and shelters.
    • There also exist general problems with the animal;
      • The Asiatic black bear is listed as being unlockable at a 2-star rating, even though it has a coded adoption rarity and cost for a 3-1/2-star animal, like the Grizzly Bear.
      • Guest attacks may have issues due to the task calling for a behaviour that doesn't exist.
  • In August 2016 a user by the name of Horse14t remastered the original Asiatic Black Bear for Zoo Tycoon 2 and fixed all the bugs and put it up for download, along with the Addax, on various websites. This version of the bear is a mixture of previous other restorations with additional tweaks, like fixing the Zoopedia and Conservation status.
  • The Asiatic Black Bear is the only animal that was not included in Zoo Tycoon 2: Ultimate Collection.
  • The Asiatic black bear was initially considered for inclusion in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game. It would have replaced the Giant Panda, which was billed as a Kickstarter exclusive animal, in a planned retail version of the game. The idea was ultimately scrapped in favor of including the giant panda in all versions.
  • Asiatic black bears were originally planned to swim in Zoo Tycoon, even having an unused animation, but cannot swim in the final release.
