The Barbary Ape (Macaca sylvanus) is a mid-sized primate from Africa and Europe. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The Barbary ape, also known as the Barbary Macaque, is a species of monkey native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco, in North-West Africa. Like many monkeys, males are larger than females, weighing up to 16kg (35lbs) compared to the female's weight of up to 11kg (24lbs). Although not a true ape, it is named as such due to its tail, which is vestigial and sometimes completely absent.

The Barbary ape is found in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, scrubs and mountains, where they can find a variety of plant and insect prey. They live in large groups that can number up to 100 individuals and, unique to macaques, males will help to raise young. The Barbary ape once ranged across North Africa and Southern Europe, but numbers decreased following the Ice Ace, and the present-day Barbary apes are under threat due to logging. A population was introduced to the island of Gibraltar and these remain the only wild monkey population in Europe.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The Barbary ape is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the African Adventure expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 2.5 stars.

The Barbary ape is a Temperate Forest animal. Like all primates, it is highly social and males may mate with more than one female. They are unable to swim.

Zoopedia Zoopedia Description
The Barbary ape is a tail-less monkey whose body is about 61 cm (24 in) long and covered with greenish-brown hair. It is the only macaque native to regions outside Asia, and it is abundant in some parts of North Africa. In the wild, the Barbary ape lives in high cedars and oak forests of the Atlas mountains of Morocco and Algeria. The wild population is estimated at between 14,000 and 23,000.

The Barbary ape occurs in fossil records during the Pleistocene Epoch (2.5 million to 10,000 years ago) and is now the only monkey found in Europe. This European population was probably introduced, however, and is restricted to about 240 animals, found on Gibraltar; when the population exceeds this number, the additional animals are shipped to zoos.
