The Barbary Lion (Panthera leo leo) is a North African lion population that is extinct in the wild. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox).

Description[]

The Barbary Lion, also known as the Atlas or North African Lion, is a lion population formerly native to the deserts and mountains of the Barbary Coast of Northern Africa. Often claimed to be the largest type of lion, wild males were claimed to weigh up to 300kg (660lbs), although these statistics are not verified. Barbary lions were reported to live in pairs or small family groups in the 18-1900s, though it is believed that Barbary lions may have lived in larger prides when they were more abundant. Barbary lions would have hunted deer, such as the Barbary Stag and Red Deer as well as gazelles, and wild boar. Hunting by humans drove the wild Barbary lion to extinction, the last photo and confirmed sighting of a wild Barbary lion being taken in 1925. The Barbary lion was once thought to be completely extinct until DNA evidence taken in the early 2000s found that some Barbary lions remained in captivity, the population now being classed as Extinct in the Wild.

Barbary lions were particularly famous for their large, thick and long manes that would extend past the elbow and across the abdomen, these impressive manes were likely an adaptation to the colder climates of the Atlas Mountains.

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]

The Barbary Lion is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) and is available in the base game. It is an unlockable animal and isn't available for adoption until a challenge zoo reaches a fame level of three, which will unlock it for Sandbox Mode at a fame level of 3.

The Barbary lion is a Savannah animal and was featured in the Barbary Lion Dilemma community challenge, the first of a series of in-game community challenges that were done to raise money for endangered animals.
