Bigfoot, also commonly known as Sasquatch, is a large ape-like creature that is believed to roam the forests of North America. "Sightings" describe a large bipedal animal standing 6 to 10 feet tall and covered in fur that ranges from reddish-brown to black. According to accounts, it has a human-like face with a flat nose, long arms and a foul odor often compared to rotten eggs. Hoot-like calls and eerie human-like chatter have been reported as possible vocalizations. Another variant called the "Skunk Ape" with a more orangutan-like form has also been reported in southeastern regions of the United States.
Claims of the existence of Bigfoot, like the similar Yeti of Asia, are believed to extend back to Native American folklore, with various tribes reportedly having seen a large ape-like animal. The name "Bigfoot" came into use in 1958 to describe some large footprints discovered at a logging company in northwest California. Many sightings have been made since, but most of these are believed to be either misidentification or hoaxes. Possible candidates for the "sightings" of Bigfoot include bears, apes that escaped captivity, and even humans.
Zoo Tycoon[]
Bigfoot is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon. It is a downloadable animal that was included as part of the Endangered Species Theme Pack and is classed as a Zoo Tycoon animal. Its inclusion was kept secret until the release of the pack, along with the Loch Ness Monster.
Bigfoot is a Coniferous Forest animal. It prefers slight elevation in its exhibit.

| For years, scientists and researchers have searched for Bigfoot, an elusive primate that has been sighted throughout Canada and the Northwestern United States. The earliest recorded sightings of Bigfoot were by Native Americans, who named it Sasquatch ("hairy man"). The Sasquatch is thought to be related to the Yeti of Nepal, and more distantly related to the great apes and other large primates.
Very little is known about these animals. Studies of their tracks lead scientists to believe that most have two to six toes on large feet. Each footprint measures over fifteen inches long. Unlike the great apes, which are quadrupeds, the Sasquatch is bipedal. Standing about twelve feet tall, these large and heavy creatures leave deep tracks as they travel through the woods. Although humanlike, there are many physiological differences between a Sasquatch and a human. Besides standing much taller, the chest of the Sasquatch is proportionally larger than that of a human, while the head is proportionally smaller. The entire body is covered by a thick, coarse hair. The Sasquatch is notoriously shy, and few prior observations have been made. The most famous observation was by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin in 1967. While on an assignment to film habitat known to be frequented by a Bigfoot, these photographers managed to record several minutes of film as a female of the species ran in front of their horses and across a clearing. Still photos have been recorded by other observers as well, including a well known series of photos taken by a park ranger in the Mount Rainier foothills. Sound recordings exist as well, demonstrating that sasquatches communicate using a series of growls, howls and grunts to alert each other to danger. Unfortunately, many skeptics choose to believe that Bigfoot is a hoax. Although footprints and films can be faked, an exhibit at your zoo will convince the world, for once and for all, that Bigfoot lives. |
