The Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is a large African ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in many Zoo Tycoon games.
Description[]
The black rhinoceros is one of five extant species of rhinoceros and one of two species native to Africa, the other being the larger White Rhinoceros. A male black rhinoceros can reach 180cm (71in) at the shoulder and weigh up to 1400kg (3090lb). The longest of the two horns on its snout can reach up to 140cm (55in), although they tend to be shorter. Despite its name, the black rhinoceros is typically grey in color. Its large ears and nostrils indicate a strong sense of hearing and smell respectively, although their sense of sight is more acute than often believed despite having small eyes.
The black rhinoceros is a browser, using its hooked, prehensile upper lip to pluck leaves and branches from trees of the thick shrublands they typically live in. Black rhinoceroses generally live a solitary lifestyle and has a reputation for being extremely aggressive, charging at anything it may perceive as a threat. The black rhinoceros was once found across Africa, but due to heavy poaching for its horns, only about 6,421 individuals are found in the wild, in isolated regions of Southern Africa and as such it is currently considered critically endangered.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The black rhinoceros is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it cannot be adopted until June 1.
The black rhinoceros is a savannah animal that requires a lot of space for more than 2 individuals, although it otherwise has relatively simple requirements, requiring only some fresh water and dirt. It is a solitary animal and can be kept on its own or as a pair. The black rhinoceros' favorite foliage is the Umbrella Thorn Acacia Tree, and requires a moderate amount of foliage and a small amount of rocks. It is an easy animal to meet its habitat suitability, able to maximize its habitat suitability using only its favourite foliage in clusters and Medium Savannah Rocks, without the need of shelters. For shelters, the black rhinoceros can use the Stable, Concrete and Wood Shelters, though gets the most happiness from the Large Stable.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The black rhinoceros is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is adoptable once the zoo receives three stars of fame.
The black rhinoceros once again prefers the Savannah biome and can eat a variety of different foods, including grass, hay, branches, fruits and cycad leaves. The black rhinoceros is a highly entertaining animal, able to use a variety of enrichment objects such as balls, the Plastic Barrel, Car Tire, Salt Lick, Scratching Post and the Dinosaur Prey Dummy. It can also eat enrichment food, such as the Apple, Durian and the Block of Ice with an Apple or Banana. For shelter, the black rhinoceros can use the Shade Structure, Stables, or Large Concrete Shelter.

The Black Rhinoceros is a Savannah biome animal that also likes some dirt and water in its exhibit along with some Acacia Trees, Thorn Bush and Small Rocks as decoration.
Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game[]
The Black Rhinoceros is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game. It is classed as a Level 2, Savannah Main Species in the Ungulate class, represented by its own meeple.
As a Level 2 animal, the Black Rhinoceros can only be adopted if no species in a player's zoo has a happiness below light green. It is not a social animal, only tolerating living on its own or as a pair, and is also not compatible with Co-Species. The Black Rhinoceros is also part of The Serengeti Conservation Project along with the plains zebra, common ostrich, giraffe, lion, blue wildebeest and the Fischer's lovebird.

- The black rhinoceros originally could not swim in the base game of Zoo Tycoon 2. Installation of Endangered Species updates the black rhinoceros' coding, which allows it to swim.
- Prior to being split into 3 subspecies, the black rhinoceros' appearance in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) was originally the species as whole and a faded grey colour. Remnants of this original black rhinoceros can be seen from data mining the game files.
- The black rhinoceros can be seen on the Breeding Stop and Ungulate Disease Event Cards, as well as the Savannah Species Donor Card.
