The Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) is a medium-sized cartilaginous fish. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The blacktip reef shark is a species of requiem shark, a family that contains a variety of tropical migratory sharks such as the Tiger Shark. Reaching an average length of 1.6m (5.2ft), it is identifiable by the prominent black markings on its dorsal fin and tail. It is commonly found in tropical coral reefs in the Indian and Pacific oceans and individuals will remain in one particular region for several years at a time.

Like most sharks, the blacktip reef shark is an active predator and will hunt smaller bony fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, but may also attack sea birds and smaller members of their own kind. Like many sharks, females give birth to live young, which spend the early parts of their lives in shallower waters for protection. Known to be quite skittish, the blacktip reef shark rarely ever attacks humans. Although common across most of its range and a popular aquarium exhibit due to its "stereotypically shark-like appearance", numbers are declining due to overfishing.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The blacktip reef shark is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 3 stars. Each individual costs $10000 to adopt.

The blacktip reef shark is a Reef animal and one of only two animals in-game to live in it, with the other being the Manta Ray. It will sometimes swim around really fast as a means to exercise, similar to Cheetahs running around their exhibits.

zootycoon.com Description
Named for the distinctive black markings on its pectoral and dorsal fins, the blacktip reef shark inhabits the warm shallow waters of tropical lagoons, coral reefs, and some shoreline areas. Though fish are a staple of its diet, the blacktip reef shark also uses its sharp serrated teeth to consume crustaceans (crabs and lobsters) and cephalopods (octopus and squids). In shallow waters off the coast of Australia, this shark is also known for eating a large number of snakes. Blacktip reef sharks are smallish in size and generally not dangerous to humans.
