The Bluebuck is a mid-sized extinct African ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The bluebuck is an antelope, most closely related to the Roan Antelope and the Sable Antelope. The largest known specimen stood 119cm (47in) tall at the shoulder and had long, curved horns. While not truly blue, the silvery coat sported by bluebucks often appeared blue at times, earning the species its name. Unlike its relatives, the bluebuck had a shorter mane and did not possess any white markings on its head.

The bluebuck's main habitat was grassland areas and shunned forest area, not dissimilar to the habitat of the African Buffalo. However, bluebuck are thought have more selective feeding habits, primarily feeding on grasses and dicots. An endemic species of Southern Africa, bluebucks would not have been uncommon in the Fynbos shrublands unique to South Africa. While its modern range was restricted to the Cape Peninsula, fossils of bluebucks have been found as far North as Lesotho. Bluebucks are thought to be the "Inputi" in The Story of the Hare, a South African fable where this creature protects livestock fields. Ironically, this species suffered heavily from the introduction of colonial agriculture, as they were unable to forage in pastures occupied by cattle. With additional pressures from overhunting, the bluebuck went extinct by the turn of the 19th century.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The bluebuck is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the Extinct Animals expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of a 1/2-star, and can have its fossils uncovered with the Level 1 Fossil Finder.

Habitat[]

The bluebuck's main biome is grassland, while being able to tolerate the Savannah biome.

Diet[]

Bluebucks are obligate gramnivores, meaning they will only eat Grass.

Enrichment[]

The bluebuck uses the salt lick, and will need a Misty Spring to have its biome need fully satisfied.

Shelter[]

They will use shade structures for shelter, as well as stables.

Behavior[]

Bluebuck are social animals that live in herds. Females will give birth to one calf at a time.

Under normal circumstances, bluebuck do not mind sharing their exhibits with other animals. However, an adult bluebuck that is unhappy at night will attack and kill any adult animals deemed to be "food competitors" (medium-sized animals that eat Grass or Hay, such as the Markhor or Red Kangaroo). This behaviour should be considered when housing bluebucks in mixed exhibits.

zootycoon.com Description
The bluebuck, also called the blue antelope, looked similar to other species in the antelope family. It had two medium-length sweeping horns, no mane, and a darker coat on top with a white underbelly. The bluebuck lived in the southwestern coastal area of South Africa and became extinct around 1800. This delicate antelope may have preferred blossoms to bushes: The particular grasslands that this species inhabited were—and are today—some of the most biologically rich lands on the planet, and the plant life is colored by an abundance of flowers, mostly of the daisy family.
