The Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus), more accurately the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, is a large Atlantic bony fish. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon.
Description[]
The Atlantic bluefin tuna is the largest species of tuna and one of the largest fishes of the Scombriformes order, averaging at a length of 6.6–8.2ft (2–2.5m), but can be as long as 13ft (4m). Mature specimens typically weigh up to 250kg (551lb), but the largest individuals have been known to weigh 679kg (1497lb). Tuna are believed to mature very quickly, reaching sexual maturity within 15 years. It is believed that tuna can live for 50 years in the wild.
The Atlantic bluefin tuna is an apex predator, primarily hunting small fish such as herring and diving to depths of over 1000m to find food. They are incredibly fast and efficient swimmers, keeping their bodies straight whilst their tails propel them through the water. This, combined with a very efficient circulatory system, allows them to keep up with and catch their prey. Tuna will also team up with other predators, such as seals, dolphins and sharks, to corral schools of fish together to make them easier to catch. Like many large fish, the Atlantic bluefin tuna is severely threatened by overfishing and is classed as an endangered animal by the IUCN.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The bluefin tuna is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Freeform mode, it is adoptable from the start and is one of the first fully aquatic animals available to the player.
Like all Marine Mania animals, the bluefin tuna is an Aquatic animal. Although the bluefin tuna does not require a large exhibit, it is very social, requiring at least six individuals in its tank and a tank depth of three to be happy. The bluefin tuna also has a very low animal density, allowing the player to fit up to 20 adult bluefin tuna in a single 10x10 exhibit.
The bluefin tuna's favorite foliage is sargassum, but it also likes several other plants like the Divercate Tree Coral, Feather Duster Worm, Fire Coral, Red Gorgonian, Sand Dollar, and Sea Cucumber to a lesser extent. The bluefin tuna is an easy animal to keep, not requiring any shelters or toys in its exhibit and having low rock and foliage requirements; though, it requires at least a few Small Ocean Floor Rock clusters to maximise its habitat suitability.
