The Cinnamon bear is a subspecies of American Black Bear native to Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Wyoming, Alberta, and British Columbia. Like all black bears, it is typically found in forested areas. Although an adult male can weigh up to 250 kg (551 lb), it is smaller than the Brown Bear and Polar Bear. Unlike brown bears, black bears do not possess a shoulder-hump and typically have shorter claws. Unlike many other American black bear subspecies, the cinnamon bear is not actually black. Instead, its fur is a reddish-brown color, reminiscent of cinnamon, from which the name was derived. Although black bears from other subspecies may also have brown fur, the subspecies was given the designation because the lighter color phase is more common in its own range than in other areas.
Cinnamon bears, like all bears, typically lead solitary lives. They are omnivorous, with roughly 85% of their diet being plant-based. Cinnamon bears will often use their highly developed sense of smell to detect the freshest food and their highly dexterous paws to gain access to hard-to-reach places. Cinnamon bears are also good climbers and swimmers.
