Description[]
The common wombat is one of three species of wombat native to Australia. Like all wombats, it is stocky and short-legged, weighing on average around 26kg (57lbs). It has long front claws and rodent-like front teeth, both adapted for digging. The common wombat can be identified by its bald nose, giving it the alternate name Bared-Nosed Wombat.
Found in a variety of habitats, including forests, mountains and heathlands, wombats are primarily burrowing animals, digging very large burrows in which they live. Adaptations for a burrowing life include a backward facing pouch, which prevents soil being gathered over its joey, and a toughened rear hide that acts as a shield to prevent predators such as the Dingo and Tasmanian Devil from grabbing it. Wombats are herbivorous and feed primarily on grass. The common wombat is widespread across South-East Australia and Tasmania, and can live for up to 15 years in the wild.
