Various Demos, also known as Trials, have been released for Zoo Tycoon. Including base games and their expansion packs. Demos are usually free and are smaller than the full game or expansion, so the player can try out a game or expansion before deciding if they want to buy the full version or not. Demos are also a way to help advertise a new game or expansion before the full release.

Zoo Tycoon Trial[]

The Zoo Tycoon Trial was released on October 20, 2001 for Zoo Tycoon. It includes 4 animals common in real-life zoos, although only male animals can be adopted.

Marine Mania + Dinosaur Digs Trial[]

On November 20, 2002, a trial version of Marine Mania and Dinosaur Digs was released. The trial features four tutorials, one from Dinosaur Digs, and three from Marine Mania. Animals also included the following;

Marine Mania Demo[]

The Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania Demo is a demo released on October 9, 2006 in collaboration with Perdue Farms that was both physically available and available to download for free on the Zoo Tycoon 2 website. Included in this demo was a custom map to demonstrate the new tank building and marine show mechanics.

Tutorial Intro
Welcome to the Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania trial version! First you'll learn how to train marine animals and create your very own marine show. Then you'll get a chance to build your very own zoo using just a few of the great new animals and objects. When you're ready to begin, click the check button to continue. In Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania you can train certain marine animals to perform trained behaviors, or tricks, which can then be performed at marine shows.

The first part of the campaign is a tutorial to help familiarize the player with how to play Zoo Tycoon 2, and introducing the new mechanics added with Marine Mania. This involves selecting a pre-placed dolphin (Beaky), accommodating his needs, and training him to perform in the show tank connected to his main tank.

After the player finishes the tutorial, the following goals are required to complete the trial version:

Exhibit eight or more animals (of any species) in your zoo.
Earn $2,000 in donations from marine shows.

After the goals have been accomplished, the trial ends.

The Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals Demo is, as the name suggests, a trial version of Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals.

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox 360) Demo[]

The Xbox 360 Demo of Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) was released on November 30th, 2013. This version of the demo was more catered to the full Zoo Tycoon (Xbox 360) version of the gmae, lacking animals such as antelope and Xbox One exclusive (sub)species.

The demo has since become lost media due to the discontinuation of the Xbox 360 store on July 29, 2024 and is only able to be played on Xbox 360s that downloaded the demo before its discontinuation.

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) Demo[]

On November 22, 2013 the Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) Demo was released, the same day as Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) released.

The demo is only available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S.

Ultimate Animal Collection Demo[]

The Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection Demo was released on December 21, 2018 for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S. One year after Ultimate Animal Collection came out.

The demo features several animals from Ultimate animal Collection as well as the base game and a single, Challenge Mode map for the player to play on.
