The Dromedary Camel (Camelus dromedarius), or simply Dromedary, is a large North African ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2 as well as both DS games.
Description[]
The Dromedary is a member of the camel family and the tallest of three camel species, with males reaching a height of two meters (6.6 feet) at the shoulder. It is a desert animal and has many adaptations to help it survive. Its characteristic hump can store up to 80lb (36kg) of fat, which the camel can use as an energy resource. Its wide padded feet help it traverse sandy regions and it has a double layer of eyelashes in order to protect its eyes against flying sand and dust. As an extra precaution, a dromedary can close its nostrils as well.
The dromedary was originally native to the Sahara Desert of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It is believed to have been first domesticated by humans around 4,000 years ago and now it only exists in a domestic form, although feral herds can be found in Australia. They are herbivores and will regularly eat thorny plants.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The Dromedary Camel is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it is not adoptable until the sixth in-game month. It features in several early scenarios, including Small Zoo, where it is one of the three starting animals used.
The dromedary camel is a desert animal and one of two featured in-game, the other being the Gemsbok, which it can co-exist with. It is very easy to keep with little requirements beyond a sandy enclosure and some dirt. They are easy to breed.
Due to a coding error, it is impossible to max out the dromedary camel's habitat suitability. The highest the habitat suitability can be is 90% without going over the foliage limit. If the player goes over the foliage limit by 3 they can reach a maximum of 94%. Like the gemsbok, the Palm Tree, Small or Medium Rocks and the Stable shelter give the camel the most suitability.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The Dromedary Camel is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. It has a half star rating and as such is one of the first animals available in Challenge and Campaign mode.
As before, the dromedary camel is a Desert animal, although it will tolerate the savannah biome. They can be fed on hay and branches and will use the shade structure, scratching post and salt lick. Males will fight each other and they are easy to breed. Occasionally, the dromedary camel may spit on guests near the fence to satisfy some of its stimulation need.

- The dromedary camel is one of the four animals in the Zoo Tycoon 2 Demo. The other three are the Thomson's Gazelle, the Bengal Tiger, and the Common Peafowl.
- Curiously, when a Dromedary Camel is adopted in Zoo Tycoon DS, the camel makes a very weird clucking noise.
- The dromedary camel is the only animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 DS that uses the desert biome.
- When an escaped dromedary camel interacts with guests in Zoo Tycoon 2, it spits on them rather than attacking.
- The dromedary camel's render from its Hints and Tips page is the same render used in the Zoo Tycoon Card Flip game.
