The Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes Forster) is a medium-sized Antarctic bird. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon 2 and both DS games.
Description[]
Standing at 1m (39in) tall and weighing up to 45kg (99lb), the Emperor Penguin is the largest species of penguin. It is endemic to the Antarctic continent and, like all penguins, it possesses counter-shading plumage, dark on top and lighter underneath, for camouflage whilst swimming. It is highly adapted for aquatic life, using its wings as flippers to swim through the ocean whilst hunting for fish and squid. The emperor penguin can dive to a depth of 535m in order to hunt for food and hold its breath for twenty minutes at a time.
The emperor penguin is unique amongst penguins in that it breeds during the Antarctic winter. They gather together in large breeding colonies to form or reinforce pair bonds. The males will incubate their single egg in a special brood pouch and huddle together to keep warm during the long winter nights.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The emperor penguin is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. It can not be obtained in Freeform Mode until three in-game months have passed. It features in the downloadable Arctic Zoo scenario, despite not being an Arctic animal.
The emperor penguin is a tundra animal and requires snow and salt water in its exhibit, plus several Snowy Rocks and Formations. They may need more or less rocks and formations depending on other habitat factors, such as if they have both types of toys they like or have a shelter or not. Additionally, like the Polar Bear, if Marine Mania is installed the player can get the penguin to 100% suitability easier by using tanks instead of salt water terrain. They are easy to keep, although they do produce a lot of poop. If kept in a highly suitable exhibit, a special animation will play where the penguin will put on a bow-tie and dance.
If sixteen penguins are exhibited in a zoo, the player will obtain the Penguin Colony award.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The emperor penguin is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. It is a one star animal with a $2,000 cost.
The emperor penguin is once again a tundra animal that also requires water to swim in. It requires deep water in its enclosure to satisfy its privacy need.
In Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania the emperor penguin was updated to be compatible with tanks and other marine features.

- The emperor penguin has been included in several Zoo Tycoon games. However, in real life they are notoriously difficult to keep and only held in Japan and at SeaWorld parks. In contrast, the closely related king penguin is more common in captivity.
- In Zoo Tycoon, emperor penguins appear peaceful, and even dance when their exhibit suitability is 90% or higher, but due to a coding error, the penguin can kill almost all other animals. As a reference to this oddity, there is an unlockable animal introduced in the sequel's expansion, Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals, known as the Killer Penguin.
- In Zoo Tycoon, emperor penguin chicks have similar textures and artwork to their adult counterparts. In Zoo Tycoon 2, the chick texture reflects how they look in real life.
