The Ethiopian Wolf (Canis simensis) is a mid-sized African canid. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The Ethiopian wolf, also known as the Simien Jackal, is a species of canid endemic to the highlands of Ethiopia. It is similar in size and shape to the coyote, reaching shoulder heights of 62cm (24in) and weighing up to 19.3kg (43lbs), and can be identified by its long, narrow snout and its rusty red and white fur, which can turn yellow in females during the breeding season. Like with many canids, males are slightly larger than females.

Restricted to alpine grasslands and heathlands, the Ethiopian wolf is a social animal, living in groups ranging from six to twenty individuals. Unlike other social canids, which hunt large animals together, Ethiopian wolves will forage for prey alone, with each individual patrolling separate areas of their large territory. They specialize in hunting small prey, such as mole-rats. Although no threat to livestock, to the point where farmers will often leave their herds unattended within their territories, Ethiopian wolves are one of the rarest canids in the world, with threats including disease, habitat loss and hybridization with domestic dogs.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The Ethiopian wolf is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the African Adventure expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge Mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 5 stars, making it the highest ranked animal in the expansion pack.

Habitat[]

Ethiopian wolves live in the alpine biome, and can tolerate the Boreal forest biome (as well as tundra to a lesser extent).

Diet[]

They are carnivores and feed on meat and fish.

Enrichment[]

They enjoy playing with a variety of balls and the beef shank.

Shelter[]

Ethiopian wolves will use all rock caves, wooden shelters, cubbing dens, concrete shelters, the kopje, and the raised sleeping platform.

Behavior[]

Ethiopian wolves are social animals that live in family groups (packs). Females will give birth to two pups at a time. The females will sometimes kill each other over territory so it is best to have only one male and one female. Similar to the Ratel, Ethiopian wolves emit an odour that negatively effects other animals in the exhibit.

zootycoon.com Description
The Ethiopian wolf is the only wolf found in Africa, and it exists in only a handful of mountain ranges in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is a carnivore that generally feeds on rodents, either by digging them from their burrows or by chasing them down. On rare occasions, Ethiopian wolves hunt cooperatively to bring down a larger animal, such as a young antelope.
