The Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda) is a small African canid. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
With a body length of just 39.5cm (15.6in), the fennec fox is the smallest species of wild canid. Its most distinguishing features are its large ears, which can reach up to 10cm (3.9in) long in the largest individuals and are proportionately the largest ears of any canid. The fox uses its ears not only to locate prey moving underground, but also to dissipate the heat of the deserts in which it lives. Its paw pads are covered in dense fur, which allows it to walk on sand without sinking or burning its feet.
The fennec fox is native to northern Africa and is most commonly found in the Sahara desert. Although well adapted for the hot desert environment, it is most active at dawn and dusk, where it hunts for insects and small mammals, as well as fruits. The fox will typically spend the warmest parts of the day in its den, which it digs into the sand. Some dens are interconnected with other dens, allowing multiple families to share the same denning area. Fennec foxes can live for up to 14 years in captivity and is sometimes kept as an exotic pet.

The fennec fox is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Endangered Species expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 2 stars.

The fennec can dig with great speed, and when pursued it seems almost to dive into the sand. Its burrow is lined with soft material, such as bits of fur and feathers. Fennecs usually sleep during the day, coming out at night to seek prey. - One interesting technical aspect of the fennec fox is how it affects guests. Though adult fennecs have a view bonus of only 30, their offspring have an incredibly high viewing bonus of 85. Because the animal is available for adoption at only two stars, baby fennec foxes are among the most valuable animals that a player can have in a zoo.
- The fennec fox is the only animal to appear in boxart where it is not available. In this case, being the boxart for African Adventure.
- The fennec fox has the lowest addition space requirement of any animal, with extra animals needing only 10 units to be completely satisfied.
