The Florida Panther (Puma concolor couguar, formerly Puma concolor coryi) is a mid-sized North American felid. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The Florida Panther is a very rare population of North American cougars exclusively found in Florida and is one of the last populations found in the eastern United States. Weighing up to 72kg (159lbs) in males, the Florida panther is an opportunistic hunter that can hunt prey as small as hares and mice, or as large as deer and alligators. It is most commonly found across swamp forests, but occupies only around 5% of its original range. Poaching and diseases have decimated the population and by the 1970s, only twenty individuals remained in the wild. Thanks to conservation efforts, the numbers have since increased.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The Florida Panther is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Endangered Species expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 5 stars. As a Critically Endangered species, for each birth of a kitten the player receives a Balloon Bouquet which in turn can be used as decoration, or sold for $250 each to alleviate the extremely steep $50,000 cost of the panther.

The Florida panther is a Wetlands animal. It is a carnivore that eats meat from various feeders and will use the cat climber and the stuffed prey dummy as enrichment. Preferred shelters include the caves, concrete shelters, wooden shelters, the kopje, the raised sleeping platform, and the shade structure. Florida Panthers are territorial animals, and unrelated males may fight or kill each other. Females may give birth to 2 or 3 kittens at a time.

The Florida panther is the only cougar found east of the Mississippi in North America. The Everglades and cypress swamps of southern Florida provide one of the last refuges in the eastern United States for this animal. It is classified as a critically endangered species and is protected by state and federal law. The Florida panther has also received extraordinary public support in Florida and was championed by a campaign of schoolchildren and named the official state animal in 1982.
