Description[]
The fossa is a cat-like carnivoran native to the African island of Madagascar, and is the largest mammalian carnivore of its range. It resembles a small Mountain Lion, with a cat-like body up to 80cm (31in) and weighing up to 8.6kg (19lb). It is adapted to living in trees, with reversible ankles to help it climb down trees and a tail that is nearly as long as the rest of its body to aid balance. Despite resembling a cat, it and other members of its family are believed to be more closely related to mongooses.
Widespread across Madagascar, the fossa inhabits forested areas and is active during the day and night. It preys primarily on lemurs, which it will hunt on land or in the trees. Paired individuals have been observed hunting together. After mating, a female may give birth to up to six pups, which become independent after a year. Habitat destruction is the main threat of the fossa in the wild.
Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]
The Fossa is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox). It is a mini-exhibit animal that can be housed in the Savannah Rock mini-exhibit (with a minimum social group of 2). It is available once the player reaches a Zoo Fame of twelve stars.

- In late 2001, Microsoft held the "Beast in Show" contest where a voted animal could win representation in Zoo Tycoon. One of the finalists was Farrah the fossa. Had Farah won the contest over Magnet, fossas would have been available in the original game as downloadable content.
