The Gerenuk (Litocranius walleri) is a mid-sized African ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
The sole member of its genus, the gerenuk is a species of antelope identifiable by its long neck and legs, giving it the alternative name Giraffe gazelle. Males may reach up to 105cm (3.5ft) tall and weigh up to 52kg (115lbs), with females being smaller. Only males possess horns, which are lyre-shape in appearance. The gerenuk's back is distinctly darker than the rest of its body.
Native to eastern Africa, the gerenuk lives in dry wooded savannah in small herds of up to six individuals. It is a browser, feeding on a variety of bushes and trees. Whilst feeding, a gerenuk will rear up onto its hind legs to reach vegetation, allowing it to feed over 2m (6.7ft) off the ground. The gerenuk is adapted for a sedentary life in dry conditions; it does not need to drink often and rarely travels outside its home range. A gerenuk may live for up to eight years in the wild and slightly longer in captivity.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The gerenuk is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the African Adventure expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 2 stars.
Habitat[]
The gerenuk lives in the scrub biome. It will tolerate the Savannah biome.
Diet[]
The gerenuk is an herbivore that feeds on branches. Gerenuk are unable to drink from a natural water source and they must drink from a food dish or a metal food trough with water.
Enrichment[]
Gerenuk are content with the salt lick.
Shelter[]
The gerenuk will use the shade structure.
Behavior[]
Gerenuk live in herds. Males will breed with more than one female. Females give birth to one calf at a time.

The gerenuk (Somali for “giraffe-necked”) is a relative of the gazelle, but it has an elongated neck that allows it to eat trees and plants that are several feet tall. It sometimes stands on its hind legs to feed from trees and uses its forelegs to pull the branches down within reach. Gerenuks live in small groups and, because they are such adaptable eaters, they have no specific mating season during the year. Gerenuks are often prey for cheetahs, leopards, lions, and jackals. |
