Description[]
The Glacier bear is a subspecies of American Black Bear that has only been found in the forested regions of Southeast Alaska. Although an adult male can weigh up to 250 kg (551 lb), it is smaller than the Brown Bear and Polar Bear. Unlike brown bears, black bears do not possess a shoulder-hump and typically have shorter claws. Despite their name, not all American black bears have black fur. Although often appearing black, glacier bears are notable for having a unique silver-blue or gray coloration, the cause for which is not fully understood. It is possible that the glacier bear is merely a colormorph of the Dall Island black bear (Ursus americanus pugnax), which is the black bear subspecies most commonly identified in the region.
Glacier bears, like all bears, typically lead solitary lives. They are omnivorous, with roughly 85% of their diet being plant-based. Glacier bears will often use their highly developed sense of smell to detect the freshest food and their highly dexterous paws to gain access to hard-to-reach places. Glacier bears are also good climbers and swimmers
