The Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) is a small South American primate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game.
Description[]
The golden lion tamarin is a small New World monkey native to the Atlantic Forest of south-eastern Brazil. Although it only weighs around 620g (1.37lbs), it is still the largest species of the callitrichines, a group of primates that includes marmosets. Like all members of its family, it possesses claw-like nails on its fingers and toes to help it grip tree trunks. The golden lion tamarin's name comes from its bright orange fur and the distinctive "mane" around its head.
Native to coastal lowland rainforests, the golden lion tamarin is an arboreal animal, spending half of its time foraging for food such as fruits, nectar, gum, insects and birds eggs. It typically lives in family groups of up to eight individuals. After a gestation period of four months, a female tamarin will typically give birth to twins and other members of the group will help raise her young. Declared an endangered species since the 1980s, it is estimated that only around 3000 golden lion tamarins are left in the wild. This lead to the creation of a reintroduction program, where captive-born individuals were slowly released back into protected regions of their natural habitat.
Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game[]
The golden lion tamarin is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game. It is classed as a Level 3 "Main" species in the Primate family. Because of this, it cannot be adopted unless all other animals are suitably happy and at least two other species of primate are exhibited.
The golden lion tamarin is a Rainforest animal. It is extremely sociable, requiring at least eight individuals in its exhibits to be completely satisfied. Despite this, it does not require a very large exhibit and is quite comfortable living in small enclosed spaces. It is also tolerant of Co-Species and can be exhibited with the Axis Deer, Giant Anteater, Great Hornbill or Jabiru.
The golden lion tamarin is comparatively easy to breed and will always give birth to two offspring, but only one attempt can be made to breed them per year, regardless of how many individuals are in an exhibit. As a Level 3 species, any young born can be contributed to a reintroduction program and released back into the wild, which will earn a zoo Conservation points.
