The Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) is a large canid found in North America, Europe and Asia. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon 2 and both DS games.

Description[]

The Gray Wolf, also known as the Timber Wolf or simply Wolf, is the largest member of the canid family, reaching 85cm (33in) in shoulder height. Despite their name, gray wolves come in a variety of colours, including black, brown and white, as well as gray. Wolves are highly social, living in large packs that can have up to twenty individuals, although 5-12 animals are most common. These packs are lead by a male and female mated pair, who are the only individuals allowed to breed. Other pack members, which are typically made up of the mated pairs pups, will care for their younger siblings.

Wolves live across North America, Europe and Asia, in a variety of habitats, although they are most common in forest habitats. They are carnivorous and will eat a variety of prey, although they feed predominantly on hooved animals, which they hunt as a group. Wolves in North America will take down prey as large as American Bison and Moose.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The Gray Wolf is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it is not available until March 1.

The gray wolf is a Coniferous Forest animal, but also requires deciduous forest, grass and fresh water in their exhibit. They also require plenty of trees and a shelter, with a preference to the rock cave. Gray wolves will be comfortable with up to twenty other wolves in their exhibit, although they can live with two other animals, the Gallimimus and Lambeosaurus. Gray wolves have a high chance to reproduce once they're happy, and will reproduce quickly. They will give birth to two pups at a time. Gray wolves are also shy, and do not like crowds.

Apart from the gray wolf itself, there are two additional subspecies available in Zoo Tycoon, one of which is part of the Endangered Species Theme Pack.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The Gray Wolf is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2. It is available as part of the Endangered Species expansion pack and is obtainable in Campaign and Challenge mode at 2 and a half stars.

The gray wolf is a Boreal Forest animal and requires about ten squares of space for each individual, with the initial amount of space being 45 squares. They enjoy swimming, have plenty of enrichment options and will breed easily, able to give birth to 2-3 pups at a time. Although they can be kept in groups, females that are not related to each other will kill each other, a reference to how mated female wolves may attack and kill other, unrelated female wolves that are outsiders to the pack. For this reason, it is best to only have one male, and one female share an enclosure and build their pack with their pups instead of newly bought, unrelated wolves.

This behaviour coding is also present in the Ethiopian Wolf.

zootycoon.com Description
The gray wolf is the largest member of the wild dog family. It is a powerful, social animal that lives in a pack with a strict hierarchy. Gray wolves usually mate for life. Wolves howl to promote unity within the pack and to signal the pack's presence to other wolves. The pack works cooperatively to hunt deer, caribou, and moose. Although wolves rarely interfere with humans, humans have a long history of intentionally destroying gray wolf populations. Gray wolves were once the most widespread of all large mammals other than humans, with a range that extended over much of the Northern Hemisphere.

Trivia[]

  • Gray wolves were originally planned to swim in Zoo Tycoon, even having an unused animation, but cannot swim in the final release. However, in Zoo Tycoon 2 the gray wolf can swim.
  • In Zoo Tycoon 2, the subspecies of gray wolf is the Eastern Wolf (Canis lupus lycaon), which is sometimes considered to be a distinct species of wolf (Canis lycaon) or a subspecies of Red Wolf (Canis rufus lycaon).
  • The gray wolf in Zoo Tycoon 2 has an unused, male model, separate from the female model. This model has a broader muzzle, different vertex painting around the muzzle and ears, and an unfinished rig. It is unknown as to why this model went unused in the game but was used in the wolf's animal box.
    • The gray wolf also has an unfinished black variant texture found in the game files.
