The Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is a medium-sized wading bird from Africa, Europe and Asia. It is an adoptable animal in all three Zoo Tycoon games.

Description[]

The Greater Flamingo is the largest of the six species of flamingo and the most widespread. It lives on mudflats and lagoons across Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Southern Europe. Like other flamingos, greater flamingos get their pink colouration due to bacteria and natural pigments found in the brine-shrimp and algae that they naturally feed on, using their bills to filter-feed through the water supported by their long legs. Greater flamingos are paler than other species of flamingos, often being a pinkish-white.

A shared behaviour among flamingos, they often stand on one leg at a time. Greater flamingos live in large flocks, but are usually monogamous.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The greater flamingo is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it is not adoptable until December 1, making it one of the last animals obtainable.

The greater flamingo is a Savannah animal, but requires a complex environment, primarily consisting of fresh water alongside some sand, dirt and savannah grass. Despite being a Savannah animal, its preferred foliage is an Aquatic plant, specifically the water reed.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The greater flamingo is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge Mode, it is adoptable when a zoo reaches a rating of 1 star.

Habitat[]

Flamingos prefer lots of water in their exhibit. They live in the wetlands biome, but are also compatible with the grassland and savannah biomes (and to a lesser extent, boreal forest, temperate forest, tropical rainforest, and scrub).

Diet[]

The only food that the greater flamingo eats is shrimp.

Enrichment[]

Flamingos like to play with the rubber ball.

Shelter[]

There is no shelter available for the greater flamingo. They often have a high privacy need due to this, so making their exhibits large enough so they can hide away from guests is a must for this animal.

Behavior[]

Flamingos live in large flocks and lay only one egg at a time. The Greater flamingo has one of the shortest lifespans of any animal in Zoo Tycoon 2. They do not mind sharing their exhibits with other animals, such as hippos.

Guests[]

The Greater Flamingo is one of the animals children will mimic in the game. A Challenge Mode challenge titled "Promotional Posters" is tied to this behaviour.

zootycoon.com Description
The greater flamingo is the largest species of flamingo. Flamingos have exceptionally long legs and long, highly flexible necks. When they feed, flamingos dip the head under water and scoop backward with the head upside down. The edges of the bill have tiny narrow transverse plates called lamellae. The large fleshy tongue pressing against the inside of the bill strains the water out through the lamellae, leaving behind the small invertebrates and the vegetable matter upon which the bird feeds. Flamingos breed well in captivity, and the occasional flamingo seen north of Florida probably escaped from a zoo.

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]

The Greater Flamingo is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox). It is a mini-exhibit animal and, like other flamingos, is exhibited in the Tropical Pool mini-exhibit. It is adoptable when a zoo reaches a fame level of 23.

Trivia[]

  • The Greater Flamingo is notable for being one of the four official flying animals in Zoo Tycoon 2. The others are the peafowl, the secretary bird, and the Protarchaeopteryx.
  • The Zoopedia entry in Zoo Tycoon 2 lists the scientific name of the Greater Flamingo as "Phoenicopterus ruber ruber", this is an old, improper scientific name for the Greater Flamingo that may have confused the developers at the time. The scientific name, Phoenicopterus ruber is used for the American flamingo in the modern day.
    • This may be due to an early idea that the Greater Flamingo was a subspecies of American flamingo.
