The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is a large marine turtle found in tropical oceans worldwide. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon 2, Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania Mobile, and Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game.
Description[]
The Green Sea Turtle is one of seven extant species of turtle that are adapted for life in the sea. Despite its name, the green sea turtle has an olive-black coloration, the name coming from the color of its fat. Adults can reach lengths of 1.5m (5ft) long and weigh up to 190kg (419lb), but individuals weighing 395kg (871lb) have been recorded. Like all sea turtles, its front legs are paddle-shaped, which it uses to swim long distances in search of food.
Unlike many other sea turtles, the green sea turtle is primarily herbivorous, feeding mainly on seagrasses and algae using its serrated jaw. Almost entirely aquatic and preferring to live in warm coastal waters, female green sea turtles will only come out of the water to lay their eggs. A female may lay up to 200 eggs on the beach and will always return to the same shore she herself hatched from. The green sea turtle can live for up to 80 years in the wild, but the species is considered endangered and is protected by law in many countries.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The green sea turtle is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Freeform mode, it is not adoptable until June 1.
Like all Marine Mania animals, the green sea turtle is an Aquatic animal. Curiously, it does not require a hybrid exhibit in order to lay eggs, like its real-life counterpart. Instead, it will simply give birth to live young, like all extant reptiles in Zoo Tycoon.
The green sea turtle can live happily in a shallow tank, only requiring a depth of 2, their favorite foliage is Sargassum and requires a lot of foliage in its exhibit and a small amount of rocks.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The green sea turtle is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption once a zoo reaches a star rating of 1. Each individual costs $2,000 to adopt.
The green sea turtle is a Coastal animal, although it will tolerate Pelagic and Reef, as well as Wetlands to a lesser extent. Unlike Zoo Tycoon, the green sea turtle lays eggs and subsequently requires some land to lay them on. This can be achieved by creating a combined exhibit or placing an island in their tank. It can be safely exhibited with other Coastal animals such as the Rockhopper Penguin and West Indian Manatee.
Breeding and Profits[]
As an endangered species that breeds easily and lays multiple eggs at a time, the player will receive a Balloon Bouquet for each egg laid, which in turn can be sold for $250 each. This can be a very effective strategy for making money in a Challenge Mode game, and also to increase Zoo Fame and complete passive missions by releasing endangered animals back to the wild.
Unused Male Model[]

Unused male green sea turtle model.
The male green sea turtle has an unused model which has modelled claws and a tail, as well as a slightly different shell shape. Unlike many unused models, the male green sea turtle's model is fully complete and functional when implemented into the game and even has materials. The male green sea turtle's icon also appears to use the unused model. It is unknown as to why the male green sea turtle's model ultimately went unused, or if it was developer oversight.
The blue variant for the green sea turtle also better matches the male green sea turtle's model and texture, and may have been originally meant to be a variant for the male.

The green sea turtle is named for the color of its fat and is the fastest swimming turtle. It is common in all warm seas and may sometimes be found, in summer, along the North Atlantic coasts of the United States and Europe. The male never leaves the sea; the female leaves only to lay her eggs. As many as 200 eggs are laid at night in sand above the reach of the sea. The young use an “egg tooth” to break out of their shells, immediately start moving their flippers to rise out of the sand in which their egg was buried, and then crawl into the sea and swim away. |

Trivia[]
- Green sea turtles were originally planned to be able to move on land and swim in terrain water in Zoo Tycoon, even having unused animations for both these things, but are incapable of doing so in the final release.
- The green sea turtle is the only animal that eats from more food types as young than as an adult. Young green sea turtles in Zoo Tycoon 2 will eat Shellfish and Jellyfish in addition to the Seaweed eaten by adult green sea turtles. This is in reference to the fact that baby green sea turtles are more omnivorous than adults.
- The green sea turtle is tied with the Blacktip Reef Shark for the shallowest tank requirement in Zoo Tycoon 2, at a depth of only 3 units.
- The green sea turtle also has the lowest initial space requirement of any animal, needing just 50 units to be completely satisfied.
- Despite being an endangered animal, the green sea turtle lacks the coding needed to benefit from the Conservation Breeding Center.
- Since male green sea turtles use a separate texture from the female, the male is incapable of having variants.
