The Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) is a large South American ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox).
Description[]
The guanaco is a member of the camel family native to the steppes, scrublands and mountain regions of South America. It is one of the largest native land mammals of the continent, reaching a shoulder height of 1.3m (4.3ft) and weighing up to 140kg (310lb). Like other South American camelids, it has a double-layered coat to keep it warm in high altitudes and thick skin around its neck to protect it from predators.
Guanacos are found across the southern-most regions of South America, with a large range across Argentina. They are social animals, living in small herds consisting of a dominant male, several females and their young. When threatened, they can run at speeds of up to 56km/h (35mph) across uneven terrain and are capable swimmers. The domestic Llama is descended from the guanaco.
