The Jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large South American felid. It is an adoptable animal in all Zoo Tycoon games except for Zoo Tycoon 2 DS and Zoo Tycoon 2: Mobile.

Description[]

The jaguar is the largest feline in the western hemisphere and is found across Central and South America, with additional populations in Mexico and the Southern United States. Large males can weigh up to 158kg (348lbs), although they tend to be lighter. Its coat is a rich yellow to rusty-red, and occasionally black, spotted with large black rosettes, each consisting of a circle of spots surrounding a central spot. Although it resembles the Leopard, the jaguar is more compact and muscular, with a large, robust head.

The jaguar lives in a variety of habitats, most commonly tropical rainforests, but always close to water. It is an adept climber and excellent swimmer. It is an apex predator, preying on a variety of animals and using its strong jaws to bite through the skull of its prey; its bite is strong enough to pierce turtle shells. Although feared, the jaguar rarely attacks humans. Jaguars are typically solitary animals.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The jaguar is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. It is not unlocked in Freeform mode until June 1. It is utilized in the third tutorial in order to teach the player how to create suitable exhibits for the animals.

The jaguar is native to South America and is a tropical rainforest animal, its favorite foliage is the Kapok Tree although the Ulmo Tree will give the Jaguar more suitability. The jaguar likes to have a tropical forest floor with a little bit of fresh water and dirt. They also enjoy all the tropical rocks and like to have lots of trees. It has a medium length life span and normally reproduces only once or twice before dying.

Curiously, despite requiring a large amount of fresh water, the jaguar is incapable of swimming, even though it can in real life.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The jaguar is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge Mode, it is unlocked when a zoo reaches 2 stars of fame.

Jaguars once again live in the tropical rainforest biome, and can tolerate the grassland, boreal forest, temperate forest, savannah, and wetlands biomes to a degree. They are able to swim and like water in their exhibit.

Jaguars are carnivores that feed on meat and fish and like to play with rubber balls and the stuffed prey dummy. They will also use rock shelters.

Jaguars are more solitary animals but do like some social interaction. Litters consist of usually 2 cubs. They will prey on other animals that are put in their exhibit.

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]

The jaguar is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection, the updated version of Zoo Tycoon (Xbox). It is divided into seven different populations;

Image Name
Amazon Jaguar
Central American Jaguar
Goldman's Jaguar
Mexican Jaguar
Paraguay Jaguar
Parana Jaguar
Peruvian Jaguar

All of the populations used were once valid subspecies until 2017 when the jaguar was reevaluated and was lumped into a Monotypic Taxon, the same year that Ultimate Animal Collection was released.

The jaguar is once again a tropical rainforest animal, though can also be exhibited in a temperate forest, savannah or grasslands habitat. They can be mixed with other jaguar populations as well as cougars. Though all the jaguars share the same scientific name, none of them can interbreed. The different jaguar populations all have different colourations and spot patterns. For example, the Mexican Jaguar has large spots and a deep yellow coat, while the Goldman's Jaguar is a pale tan colour and has small spots.

The jaguar uses scratching posts, climbing frames and slides as enrichment items, curiously the jaguar cannot use the wading pools despite being well known for liking water.

Trivia[]

  • Jaguars have leftover data in Zoo Tycoon that suggests they were once able to use the Cat Climbing Tree, similarly to other cats such as the Clouded Leopard. The associated animations no longer exist, however.
  • Additionally, Jaguars have a swim animation that is commented out in their data, alongside sounds for attacking prey animals in water. Oddly, this detail is shared with the Clouded Leopard and Black Leopard. It is entirely possible that all of these animal files were based on an animal that uses these details, such as the Bengal Tiger.
