The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is a small marsupial native to Australia. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) as well as the Zoo Tycoon 2 DS and Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game spinoffs.
Description[]
The Koala is an arboreal marsupial that lives in Eastern Australia. It is recognizable by its stocky tailless body and its large head with a large black nose and fluffy ears, which gives it a resemblance to a teddy bear; hence the common but inaccurate nickname koala bear. Koalas can reach up to 85cm (33in) in length and weigh 15kg (33lbs), with males being larger than females.
The majority of a koala's diet consists of leaves from the eucalyptus trees in which they live. These provide little energy and as a result, koalas will sleep for up to twenty hours a day. Koalas are solitary and will come together only to mate. Like with most marsupials, the young is raised in a pouch for the first six months, before spending the next six months being carried on its mother's back before leaving to fend for itself. Koalas are threatened by habitat destruction, with bushfires being a major natural threat.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The koala is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the Endangered Species expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is unlocked when a zoo reaches a rating of 2.5 stars.
Habitat[]
Koalas live in the temperate forest biome and can tolerate the boreal forest biome (as well the alpine, grassland, and tropical rainforest to a lesser extent). They enjoy climbing trees.
Diet[]
Koalas are herbivores that only feed on eucalyptus.
Enrichment[]
Koalas use a variety of small balls and the lookout post for enrichment.
Shelter[]
The koala will rest in the elevated nest box.
Exhibit Tips[]
Ideal exhibit-mates for koalas include the Common Peafowl and the Red Panda, as neither are predatory, both share enrichment and shelter objects with koalas, and both have temperate forest as their primary biome. This way, koalas act as an intermediate animal due to the extreme star rating difference between the beginning peafowl and the late-game red pandas.
Elevated dishes may be purchased at higher zoo fame rates, which also satisfy koalas' stimulation need, though trees also suffice for this reason.

The koala is a tree-dwelling marsupial with a specialized diet consisting almost exclusively of the leaves of eucalyptus trees, which are poisonous to most other animals. Koalas are native to Australia, where they are sometimes called koala bears, although koalas are not related to bears. Koala young complete their development inside a pouch on the mother's abdomen. Few wild animals rival the koala bear in popularity and recognition. Its teddy-bear appearance inspires human affection and intense concern for its survival, as more and more eucalyptus forests are cleared to make room for farmland, housing, and industry. |
Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]
The koala is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection, the updated version of Zoo Tycoon (Xbox). Three subspecies are available:

Note: the latter generally does not tolerate the temperate forest biome, making it an unideal exhibit-mate for koalas.

Trivia[]
- Although not an adoptable animal, the koala appears in Zoo Tycoon as in atop of a gift shop holding the balloons.
