The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a large Asian lizard. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon 2, Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) and Zoo Tycoon 2 DS.
Description[]
The Komodo Dragon, also known as the Komodo Monitor, is the world's largest lizard, native to a series of Indonesian islands. Males can reach a length of 3m (10ft) and weigh around 70kg (150lbs), with females being slightly smaller. As there were no native mammalian predators on the island, the Komodo dragon was able to grow to its large size and become the apex predator of its region. It lives in a range of habitats, including dry savannahs and tropical rainforests, and is also a capable swimmer.
Komodo dragons are ambush predators, hunting a range of prey, including large ungulates such as deer and water buffalo. Their serrated teeth are effective weapons and even if a prey animal does escape, the Komodo dragon is venomous, which will kill the prey anywhere between a few hours to a few days after being bitten, depending on the prey's size. Komodo dragons are also known to be cannibalistic, eating younger members of their species. The Komodo dragon is classed as Endangered, and is protected by Indonesian Law.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The Komodo Dragon is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon. It is a downloadable animal and was added as part of the Endangered Species Theme Pack.
The Komodo dragon is a Tropical Rainforest animal, although it also requires a lot of fresh water in its exhibit. Despite this, the Komodo dragon is unable to swim in game. Its favorite foliage is the Mangrove Tree. The Komodo dragon also requires a small amount of elevation to 100% its habitat suitability.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The Komodo Dragon is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was included as part of the Endangered Species expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is unlocked when a zoo reaches a rating of 2 stars.
Unlike Zoo Tycoon, the Komodo dragon in Zoo Tycoon 2 is a Scrub biome animal, however they will also partially tolerate the Savannah, Desert, Grassland, and Coastal biomes. Komodo dragons can eat the beef shank and use the heat lamp as enrichment, they can also use both sizes of scrub burrows, as well as the reptile pool added with African Adventure.
Komodo dragons are coded with special hunting coding, where a hunting Komodo dragon will bite their prey, making the prey very sick. If the prey gets sick enough, it will die of illness. This behaviour only occurs on medium and large prey and predators and is in reference to the Komodo dragon's venomous bite.
Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]
The Komodo Dragon is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) and is available in the base game. It is unlocked when a zoo reaches a Fame rating of 15.
The Komodo dragon is a mini-exhibit animal and is exhibited in the Tropical Rock mini-exhibit, alongside the Nile Monitor and the Perentie. It can be placed in a mixed exhibit with the other two monitor species.

- There is a challenge included in Endangered Species, asking the player to take a picture of a young Komodo dragon using the Lookout Post. However, the young Komodo dragon's rig is missing a node, making it impossible for the intended behaviour to happen. But a picture with a Komodo dragon next to the Lookout Post or under it will work as an exploit.
- Sometimes when hunting, the Komodo dragon may get stuck on the biting animation for a prolonged amount of time, long after the prey animal has fled.
- In Zoo Tycoon, Komodo dragons can only be killed by extinct predators, like Herrerasaurus and Spinosaurus.
- Additionally, they are the only non-extinct animals that will kill the African Wild Dog.
- The Komodo dragon's conservation status was later upgraded to Endangered in 2021.
