The Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus), known in Zoo Tycoon as the Malaysian Tapir, is a mid-sized Asian ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon (Xbox).

Description[]

The Malayan tapir is the largest species of tapir. Adults typically weigh up to 320kg (710lbs) and reach a length of 2.5m (8.2ft), with females being slightly larger. Like all tapirs, it possesses a flexible proboscis, which it will use to reach food - the Malayan tapir possesses the longest trunk of all tapirs. It features a distinctive coloration, being mostly black except for a large white patch that extends from its shoulders to its rump. This "disruptive" coloration breaks up the tapir's outline, making it difficult for predators to recognize.

Unlike other tapirs, which are native to South America, the Malayan tapir lives in Southeast Asia. A solitary species, it lives in lowland rainforests, usually near water, and feeds on the leaves and shoots of various species of plants (over 115 species have been recorded). Female tapirs give birth to a single calf, which has a distinctive white spotted pattern on its brown body. Human activity, such as deforestation, is the main threat to Malayan tapirs.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The Malaysian tapir is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon. It is a downloadable animal that was included as part of the Endangered Species Theme Pack and is classed as a Zoo Tycoon animal.

The Malaysian tapir is a Tropical Rainforest animal. It is able to swim and requires a large pool of fresh water in its exhibit.

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]

The Malayan tapir is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection, the updated version of Zoo Tycoon (Xbox). It is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a fame rating of 37 and is the last of the tapir species available for adoption.

Despite its large size, the Malayan tapir is a Mini-Exhibit animal and lives in the Tropical Lawn exhibit.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being an Asian animal, Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection mentions that Malayan tapir is "specific to South America" in the Content Box in the Show Description menu. This oddity is shared with the Alligator Snapping Turtle and the Gila Monster.
    • This is because the Content Box is used to let the player know if an animal is part of the original Zoo Tycoon (Xbox), DLC or part of Ultimate Animal Collection. Those belonging to Ultimate Animal Collection being labelled as "specific to South America" or "specific to Australia".
