The Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a mid-sized African primate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
Weighing up to 37kg (82lbs), the mandrill is the world's largest monkey. Males are up to twice the size of females and have more vivid coloration. Its hairless face has an elongated muzzle with distinctive characteristics such as a red stripe down the middle and protruding blue ridges on the sides. It also has red nostrils and lips, a yellow beard and white tuffs. The coloration of the animal is more pronounced in dominant adult males. Unlike many monkeys, mandrills spend most of their time on the ground.
Mandrills are native to the rainforests of Western Africa and live in large groups known as "hordes", which can include over 1000 animals. A horde typically consists of smaller subgroups, each led by a dominant male. They are omnivorous, with a preference for fruits, but will also eat other vegetation, fungus, invertebrates and occasionally small vertebrates. As with many rainforest animals, mandrills are threatened due to deforestation and are considered Vulnerable.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The Mandrill is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it is not adoptable until September 1.
The Mandrill is a rainforest animal and requires a lot of trees in its enclosure. Its favourite foliage is the Elephant Ear Tree, however the Orchid Tree will give it slightly more suitability, enough to raise the animal's habitat suitability to 100%. It is a social creature, requiring three individuals to be happy.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The Mandrill is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the African Adventure expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is unlocked when a zoo reaches a rating of 4 and a half stars.
The mandrill is once again a tropical rainforest animal. It can utilize several enrichment items, but it may attack and kill smaller animals.

The Mandrill was a nominate species for Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game. It was part of the original vote used to determine the roster of the Additional Animal Pack, however it lost with only 115 votes (16% of votes cast). The mandrill had a second chance though during the bracket vote for the Additional Animal Pack, being pinned against the American Bison in the first round, though ultimately lost the round with only 194 votes vs the 237 the American bison received.
The mandrill would've been a Level 2 animal in the Rainforest biome and classed as a Primate.
