The Moose (Alces alces) is a large Holarctic deer. It is available in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon 2, Zoo Tycoon DS and Zoo Tycoon 2 DS.
Description[]
Standing up to 2.1m (6.9ft) at the shoulder, the moose is the largest member of the deer family. They can be identified from other deer by their extremely large antlers, which are shaped like an open hand (or "palmate"), as well as a dewlap, or bell, under their chin which has a currently unknown purpose. Moose have an extremely acute sense of smell and are capable swimmers. They are found across the northern regions of North America, but are also found in Eurasia, where they are often called elk.
Moose generally live in forests and can survive in a variety of habitats, but are rarely ever found far from water. They are browsers and tend to select food that has less fiber. Unlike many species of deer, which live in large herds, moose are solitary animals.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The moose is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it is one of eight animals of the base game that is initially available without research or downloading. It is present in a few scenarios, such as Small Zoo.
Moose are a Deciduous forest animal, but do require a bit of Coniferous forest floor, dirt, fresh water and grass in their exhibit. They also require a lot of trees in their enclosure. Despite these complex requirements, they are easy to breed, although they are also comfortable living on their own.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The moose is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is a half-star animal and as such it is one of the first animals available for adoption. They are sexually dimorphic in that the males possess antlers. Introduced with Endangered Species, there is an additional darker variant available to the male moose at random.
Habitat[]
The moose prefers the Boreal forest biome, but it can tolerate a variety of biomes (from most tolerant to least: temperate forest, alpine and wetlands (tied), grassland, and tundra).
Diet[]
They only eat branches and cycad leaves, though they are able to graze from the floor even if there is no foliage present.
Shelter[]
Placing large trees in their exhibit is the only means of satisfying their privacy need, as they are incompatible with normal shelters.
Enrichment[]
As with other large herbivores, a Scratching Post may be placed for the animal to run and clean itself against. Moose will also self-clean by shaking their bodies.
Breeding[]
They often have two calves at a time, though sometimes they can give birth to only one, and very rarely three. As with the first game, they can also live on their own.

Trivia[]
- In Zoo Tycoon, the moose is fed hay. In real life, moose are unable to digest hay and eating it could kill them.
- Outside of North America, moose are called elk, which may be why the Zoo Tycoon games generally use a North American subspecies.
- In the case of Zoo Tycoon 2, the subspecies in question is the Eastern Moose, or Alces alces americana.
- Moose are the only extant animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 to have its menu icon updated in an expansion. It is also the first animal in the game to have its icon changed.
- In Zoo Tycoon 2, there exists separate texture files for female and young moose as well as variant textures for both in Endangered Species, however, a coding error in the game prevents these skins from ever being applied without mods.
- The moose variant texture is an easter egg to how the moose looked in the original Zoo Tycoon, being a darker brown with light stockings on the legs.
