The Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is a large African primate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
The Mountain Gorilla is a subspecies of the Eastern Gorilla. Although it is smaller than the Eastern Lowland Gorilla, it is still one of the largest apes, with males reaching a height of 1.7m (67in) and weighing up to 191kg (421lbs); females are smaller. Like all gorillas, mountain gorillas live in large family groups lead by a dominant male, or "silverback". They will aggressively defend their group against rivals or predators such as leopards, but gorillas are typically peaceful animals that spend much of their day eating.
Mountain gorillas live in the montane cloud forests of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with two distinct populations known. They are primarily herbivorous, with over 85% of its diet consisting of leaves, stems and shoots from a wide variety of plants. Flowers, fruit and invertebrates such as termites are also occasionally eaten. A variety of factors, including hunting, habitat loss, disease and human wars, have lead to a decrease in gorilla numbers - as of 2018, just over a thousand individuals are known to remain.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The mountain gorilla is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 4 stars.
Habitat[]
The mountain gorilla lives in the tropical rainforest biome. They cannot swim and do not prefer water in their exhibits. They are unable to climb trees.
Diet[]
Despite having large incisors, gorillas are herbivores that feed on bananas and branches.
Enrichment[]
The mountain gorilla is a very intelligent species that likes to be stimulated with pursuit balls, easels, and tire swings.
Shelter[]
The mountain gorilla will use rock shelters and shade structures.
Behavior[]
Mountain gorillas are very social animals that live in large family groups. A gorilla troop is led by an alpha male known as the Silverback. Females give birth to one baby at a time, and all females in the troop will nurture the offspring.
