The Musk Ox (Ovibos moschatus) is a large Arctic ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
The musk ox is a large hooved mammal that, despite its name, is more closely related to sheep and goats than it is to cattle. It stands up to 1.5m (5ft) at the shoulder and can weigh up to 410kg (900lbs), with males being larger than females. Both sexes have large curved horns and a thick coat of fur, with guard hairs that can nearly reach ground level in some individuals. The musk ox received its name due to the musky smell emitted by males during breeding season, which they use to attract mates.
The musk ox is the last member of a family of bovids that were adapted for a cold climate and were common throughout the Ice Age. Today, the musk ox is found primarily in Greenland and Arctic-Canada, with introduced herds in Alaska, Norway, Sweden and Russia. It lives in large herds, grazing on a variety of plants such as glass and Arctic willows. When attacked by predators such as the Arctic Wolf, musk oxen will form a defensive ring to protect their calves.
