The Nile Monitor (Polydaedalus niloticus) is a large African lizard. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and Zoo Tycoon (Xbox).
Description[]
The Nile monitor is the largest species of lizard in Africa, with individuals reaching lengths of 220cm (7.3ft). Like all monitor lizards, it has a long, powerful tail and well-developed legs with sharp claws used for digging, climbing or defense. It has a distinctive patterning on its skin which consists of barring and rosette-like spots, which vary considerably between individuals.
The Nile monitor lives in a variety of non-desert habitats across sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the Nile river, but is largely adapted for an aquatic lifestyle and is usually found close to water. Like all monitors, it is a carnivore, seeking out prey with its forked tongue. Prey includes small mammals, other lizards, fish, eggs and even poisonous toads. Although native to Africa, the Nile monitor has also established a population in Florida, USA, where it is considered an invasive species.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The Nile monitor is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the African Adventure expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 1.5 stars.
Habitat[]
Nile Monitors prefer lots of water in their exhibit. They live in the wetlands biome, but are also compatible with the grassland and Savannah biomes (and to a lesser extent, boreal forest, temperate forest, tropical rainforest, and scrub).
Diet[]
Similarly to the Nile Crocodile, the Nile Monitor can consume meat, dinosaur meat, and fish from regular, dish, and carcass feeders.
Enrichment[]
Nile Monitors enjoy resting under a Heat lamp or on top of a Heated rock. Nile monitors can also eat beef shanks and live food lizards.
Shelters[]
Nile Monitors can rest in Scrub Burrows and the Reptile Pool, similar to the Komodo dragon.
Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]
The Nile monitor is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) and is available in the base game. It is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 2, making it the earliest standard monitor lizard available for adoption.
The Nile monitor is a mini-exhibit animal and lives in the Tropical Rock mini-exhibit, where up to two monitors can be exhibited. It is compatible with the Komodo Dragon and Perentie.
