The Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) is an ungulate native to Africa. It is available in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon DS and Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The okapi, also known as the African Unicorn, is an ungulate found only in the dense tropical forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the zebra-like striped markings on its legs and hindquarters, which contrast its dark brown body, it is actually a member of the giraffe family. Although not as tall as giraffes, an okapi can stand 1.5m (4f 11in) tall and weigh up to 350kg (770lb). The okapi displays sexual dimorphism, with males possessing short horn-like ossicones on their heads, whilst females have prominent hair whorls instead. Females are also larger than males.

Okapis are solitary animals, generally only coming together to mate. They have large territories, and a male's range will overlap several female territories. They are herbivores, using their long tongues to browse for suitable leaves, buds, fruit and other vegetation. The species was only described to the Western world in 1901, making it one of the last large animals known to science.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The Okapi is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. It can only be adopted after researching it. It features as one of the animals the player must breed in the Endangered Species Zoo scenario.

The Okapi is a rainforest animal. It is a shy animal that will become unhappy if too many guests crowd its enclosure.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The okapi is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is adoptable once the zoo has reached a 2-star rating.

As in the previous game, okapis live in the tropical rainforest biome. They do not have a recommended shelter; their privacy need is met if there are many trees in the exhibit, as well as areas where guests can't see them.

zootycoon.com Description
The okapi, or forest giraffe, is a member of the giraffe family found in the inaccessible rain forests of northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire) and western Uganda. The okapi lives a secluded life and it was not discovered until 1900. The okapi has a long, flexible blue-black tongue that it uses to rip leaves from branches. The animal visually blends into its surroundings. It feeds during the day, as well as just before dawn and after sunset. Although the okapi may travel in small family groups, this reclusive animal usually lives alone.
