The Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), specifically the Bornean Orangutan, is a large Asian ape. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon 2, Zoo Tycoon DS, Zoo Tycoon 2 DS and Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game.
Description[]
The Orangutan, whose name means "person of the forest" in the Malay language, is a member of the Great Ape family native to the island of Borneo. Together with two other species living in Sumatra, they represent the only Great Apes to naturally live outside Africa. Orangutans represent the largest truly arboreal animal, using their extremely long arms (1.5m in length) to swing and climb through trees. Males are larger than females and can be identified by their large cheek pads. Unlike other great apes, orangutans are solitary, coming together only to mate. Females give birth to a single baby, which she will raise for up to seven years.
Orangutans live in the rainforest treetops, although they will occasionally come to the ground to forage. They primarily eat fruit, but will also eat other food such as leaves, honey and insects. They are incredibly intelligent and have been known to use tools. Today, all species of orangutan are considered Critically Endangered due to poaching, habitat destruction and capture for the illegal pet trade.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The Orangutan is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon. It is a downloadable animal that was included as part of the Endangered Species Theme Pack.
The orangutan lives in the tropical rainforest and its favorite foliage is the durian tree. It requires a small amount of elevation and can utilize the Orangutan Rope Swing or Orangutan Jungle Gym as a toy.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The Orangutan is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was included as part of the Endangered Species expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 4 and a half stars.
Habitat
The orangutan lives in the tropical rainforest biome. Curiously, it will not climb trees.
Diet
The orangutan is a herbivore that feeds on branches and bananas.
Enrichment
Orangutans play with the pile of leaves, the monkey bars, and the tire swing.
Shelter
Orangutans will use several shelters, including the shade structure, rock caves, wooden shelters, concrete shelters, sleeping basket, cubbing den, raised sleeping platform and hollow tree stump.

The Bornean Orangutan is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game. It is a Level 3, Rainforest Main Species in the Primate class. It is represented by its own meeple.
As a Level 3 animal, the Bornean orangutan can only be adopted if two primate species are already present and provided the Animal Happiness rating is light green or higher. It is a social animal, requiring a minimum of three individuals, and only a single male is tolerated. If happy enough to breed, it can give birth to a single offspring. Like other Level 3 animals, any offspring born can be released into the wild.

- The orangutan is the only animal in Zoo Tycoon the Plesiosaurus will attack that cannot be placed in a tank.
- The female and baby orangutans in Zoo Tycoon 2 use the Chimpanzee rig and animations, while the male, adult orangutan uses gorilla. It is the only animal in the game to use different rigs for male and female models.
- The Bornean orangutan is one of only six sexually dimorphic animals in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game.
- The stretch goal for the male Bornean orangutan was revealed on October 27, 2022 for 235,000 CHF. The goal was reached just five days later on November 1, 2022.
