The Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus) is a large South American parrot. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game.

Description

The red-and-green macaw, also known as the Green-Winged Macaw, is the second largest species of macaw in the world, with only the Hyacinth Macaw being larger. Large individuals can reach a body length of almost a meter and weigh up to 1,708 grams. Mostly red in coloration, the red-and-green macaw gets its names from the green feathers on its upper wings and can also be identified by the red lining around its eyes.

Found in the northern regions of South America, the red-and-green macaw, like most of its kind, lives in forests and woodlands, feeding primarily on fruit and nuts. Macaws generally mate for life and the female lays her eggs in a hole of a suitable tree. Up to three eggs may be laid and the chicks fledge 90 days after hatching. Although not considered a threatened species, the macaw, like others of its kind, is in decline due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade.

Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game

The red-and-green macaw is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game, where it is one of the 23 "main" species and features its own meeple. It is classed as a Level 1 member of the bird family and, as a Level 1 animal, can be adopted at any time.

The red-and-green macaw is a rainforest animal. As a level 1 animal, it is one of the easiest species to keep. A minimum of two macaws are required for it to be happy, although it prefers living in large flocks. Despite this, it does not require much space. Any number of males or females may be kept and each pair will be able to breed. It is tolerant of co-species and can be exhibited with the Axis Deer, Giant Anteater, Great Hornbill and Jabiru.

The red-and-green macaw is also part of the Pantanal Matogrossense Conservation Project, alongside the giant anteater, jabiru and Tufted Capuchin. Any zoo exhibiting all four species will earn bonus conservation points.
