The Red Kangaroo (Osphranter rufus, formerly Macropus rufus) is a large Australian marsupial. It is an adoptable animal in all three Zoo Tycoon mainline games and the DS spinoffs.
Description[]
The Red Kangaroo is the largest of all living marsupials, as well as Australia's largest extant mammal. Adult males can reach up to 1.6m (5.2ft) high, with females being slightly shorter. Despite their name, only the males are red, with the females being a blue-gray in color. Like all kangaroos, it has large muscular hind legs adapted for the family's characteristic hopping movement and a large muscular tail.
The red kangaroo is found across Western and Central Australia in a variety of scrub, desert and grassland habitats. They live in small groups, known as "mobs", and feed primarily on grasses. Females will give birth to a single young, or "joey", and raise it in her pouch. She can also delay a birth until a previous joey has left the pouch.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The red kangaroo is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform mode, it is not adoptable until December 1, making it one of the last animals that can be obtained without research.
The red kangaroo is a Savannah animal and breeds easily, although due to the requirement of Australia foliage in its exhibit, it cannot be easily mixed with other species. Curiously, it does not exhibit sexual dimorphism in game, as both males and females are red.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The red kangaroo is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge Mode, it is unlocked at a 2-star fame level.
The red kangaroo is a Scrub animal and prefers a large exhibit. It requires little shelter or enrichment, but breeds easily.

The red kangaroo is among the largest members of the kangaroo family. Kangaroos are marsupials, a type of mammal that gives birth to undeveloped young that are carried and nurtured in a special pouch on the mother's body. In Australia, the red kangaroo has increased in numbers in response to people. Sheep ranchers favor this largest of the continent's native mammals by converting woodlands to grassland, providing sources of permanent water and fencing out or killing the dingo. Even though it may be persecuted by these same ranchers as a competitor of their livestock, the red kangaroo has benefited overall, and its population stands in the millions. |
Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]
The red kangaroo is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection, the updated version of Zoo Tycoon (Xbox). It is unlocked at a Fame level of 5 and prefers outback exhibits, as do all kangaroos.

Trivia[]
- The cost for the red kangaroo in Zoo Tycoon 2 doesn't match up with the standard price of a 2-star animal ($5,500). Instead, it has the cost of a 1-1/2-star animal like the Common Zebra or Baird's Tapir.
- The Red Kangaroo in Zoo Tycoon 2 is coded to have its pregnancy chance doubled if the player has a Conservation Breeding Center in their zoo, despite not being an endangered animal.
