Red Panda

The Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a small Asian mammal. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and Zoo Tycoon (Xbox).

Description[]

The red panda is a small member of the Carnivora group that, despite its name, is more closely related to raccoons and skunks than it is to the Giant Panda. It is similar in size to a domestic cat, with a body length of up to 64cm (25in), a tail almost as long as its body and a weight of up to 6.2kg (13.7lbs). Its thick fur - reddish-brown on top and black underneath - acts as insulation on snow-covered surfaces. It primarily lives in trees and uses its sharp claws and reversible ankles to grip branches and trunks while climbing. It is native to the temperate forests of the Himalayas, with populations in Nepal and China, although recent evidence suggests these populations may be separate species.

Although a carnivoran, the red panda has a largely omnivorous diet, feeding on flowers, fruit, birds eggs and small animals. However, its diet consists mainly of bamboo. Like the giant panda, it possesses a modified wristbone which it uses to hold bamboo whilst eating. A solitary animal largely active at dawn or dusk, red pandas come together only to mate. Red pandas have been known to live for 15 years, but the species is endangered due to habitat loss.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The red panda is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and is available in the base game. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 4 stars.

The red panda is a Temperate Forest animal. It cannot swim and does not like deep water in its exhibit.

The red panda is an herbivore that feeds on bamboo and berries.

Enrichment[]

The red panda likes to play with the rubber ball.

Shelter[]

Red pandas prefer to rest in all rock caves, concrete shelters, wooden shelters, cubbing dens, hollow tree stumps, raised sleeping platforms, and elevated nest boxes.

The red panda is a raccoon-like animal, similar in size to a large cat, with thick, reddish-brown fur. Like the giant panda, the red panda has a sixth digit near the wrist that aids in eating. The long, bushy tail has rings of red and yellow. Red pandas are found on steep mountains in western China and in the Tibetan Himalayas. They live in pairs and small groups in bamboo forests, on which they feed. They are nocturnal, sleeping in trees during the day. In the past the red panda has been classified in the raccoon family and the bear family. More recently some scientists place the red panda in the family Ailuridae, which is separate from both the raccoon and bear families.

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]

The Red Panda is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) and is available in the original game. It is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a fame rating of 10.

The red panda is a Mini-Exhibit animal and lives in the Tropical Pool exhibit. Up to two red pandas can be exhibited at a time, where they will play-fight each other. Although treated as separate animals, the red panda shares the same animations as the Binturong.

Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game[]

The red panda is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game, where it is one of the 23 "Main" species. It is classed as a Level 2 Carnivore and, as a main species, has its own meeple.

The red panda is a Montane Forest animal. As a Level 2 animal, it can only be adopted if all other species in the zoo have a happiness of light green or higher. The red panda is not a social animal and can only live on its own or as a pair. It is, however, tolerant of co-species and is compatible with the Eurasian Otter, Striped Skunk, Tundra Swan and West Caucasian Tur.
