 The reef biome is a coastal and oceanic ecosystem renowned for providing one of the most biologically diverse habitats on earth and for its beautiful life forms. A reef is an outcrop or ridge of rock situated just beneath the surface of the sea. Coral reefs are built largely or entirely by corals, which are tiny animals that live in colonies. Over a period of hundreds or even thousands of years, the limestone skeletons of dead corals continue to build up, forming an ever-growing structure for new corals. This physical structure, with its living surface of coral colonies and many other organisms, is a coral reef. |

- Reef is the primary biome for the fewest amount of animals in Zoo Tycoon 2, with only two, despite the Zoopedia mentioning that this biome is "one of the most biologically diverse habitats on earth".
- The Reef biome is the only biome added with Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania that is affected by a biome enrichment object, being the Misty spring.
- Since neither of the biome's two animals can be placed on land, the interaction between the misty spring and reef animals is non-existent.
