The scarlet ibis is one of 28 species of ibis, a group of long-legged wading birds closely related to herons and identifiable by their long, downcurved bill. Physically resembling other members of its family, the scarlet ibis can be easily identified by its bright red plumage, which covers virtually its entire body and is unique among shorebirds. Males are slightly larger than females, weighing up to 1.4kg (3.1lbs) and have a longer bill.
Found across vast areas of South America, the scarlet ibis is highly social and large flocks of around 30 individuals gather in wetlands to feed. It has a varied diet, including beetles, water bugs and shrimp - it is the shrimp that give the ibis its characteristic scarlet coloration. Mated pairs build a simple nest on top of mangrove trees and may lay up to five eggs, with both parents caring for the young. The scarlet ibis has protected status across the world and is not considered threatened in the wild.
