Description[]
Despite its name, the short-finned pilot whale is a member of the dolphin family. It is a stocky cetacean, with males reaching lengths of up to 6m (20ft) and females being slightly smaller. It features a bulbous head with a distinct melon, comparatively short flippers and a broad, sickle-shaped dorsal fin.
Short-finned pilot whales are found across the world's oceans and, like most cetaceans, are extremely social. They travel in pods of around 30 individuals and hunt squid by diving to depths of around 700m (2300ft) or more. Extremely playful and altruistic, individuals have been recorded caring for the calves of other pod members. The short-finned pilot whale has few known predators, but pods are prone to mass strandings.

The short-finned pilot whale is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 2 stars.
The short-finned pilot whale is a Pelagic animal and as such, it does not require any foliage or rocks in its tank. It is a show animal and can perform a variety of tricks.

Short-finned pilot whales have a large, rounded head and a very large dorsal fin. They are black to dark brown or gray in color, and they have a light patch (a saddle patch) just behind their dorsal fin. Short-finned pilot whales are very sociable and gregarious; they congregate in pods and communicate using complex rasping sounds and squeals. Like orcas, pilot whale pups are cared for by both their mothers and the members of the pod. Pilot whales use echolocation to hunt prey and locate objects in the water. |
