The Spanish lynx or Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is a mid-sized European felid. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The Spanish lynx is one of four felids of the genus Lynx, which are medium-sized cats distinguished by their tufted ears, neck ruff and short tail. It is the second largest of the four species, with males reaching lengths of up to 82cm (32.3in) and weighing 15.9kg (35lbs), with females being smaller. Like all lynx, and most other cat species, the Spanish lynx is a solitary animal, coming together only to mate.

The Spanish lynx was once common across the Iberian peninsula, but during the 20th century, numbers began to rapidly decline due to hunting and habitat loss. The lynx is a largely-specialist hunter, preying primarily on the European rabbit and declining populations of the rabbit caused by the diseases myxomatosis and rabbit hemorrhagic disease also caused an additional decline in lynx numbers. By the start of the 21s century, only 94 individuals were known to exist, making it one of the world's rarest cats. Conservation measures and reintroductions have since bought the numbers up, but the species is still at risk of extinction.

zootycoon.com Description
The Spanish lynx is a wild carnivore of the cat family. It has a stout body, disproportionately long legs, large paws, and thick, soft fur. Spanish lynx are agile climbers and sometimes wait among the limbs of trees to prey upon weaker mammals and terrestrial birds that pass beneath them. It is also common for lynx to stalk their prey. In inclement weather, lynx take shelter in caves or in hollow trees or logs. Spanish lynx are hunted for their fur and considered a critically endangered species.

Trivia[]

  • Since the release of Endangered Species, the Spanish lynx's conservation status has been changed from critically endangered to vulnerable.
  • Despite being a temperate forest animal, the Spanish lynx's Zoopedia entry uses the otherwise unused scrub Spain location icon instead of the temperate forest Spain location icon.
  • In Zoo Tycoon 2 DS the Spanish lynx is curiously stated to live worldwide instead of specifically Europe, where Spain is located, this is because the game does not posses a Europe location icon.
