The Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is a large South American mammal. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The spectacled bear, also known as the Andean bear, is the only species of bear native to South America and one of the largest living land animals on the continent. It is named after the cream-colored markings across its face and upper chest, which often a shape resembling glasses and are unique to each individual. Males can weigh up to 200kg (440lbs), although 115kg (254lbs) is a more typical weight; females are much smaller. Compared to other bears, the spectacled bear has a rounded face with a relatively short snout.

Although closely related to the extinct Short-Faced Bear, which was believed to be highly carnivorous, the spectacled bear is largely herbivorous. Preferred foods include cactuses, bromeliads, palm nuts, bulbs and fruit, with the bears using their acute sense of smell to locate the ripest food. Native to the cloud forests of north-western South America, it is a capable climber and will often climb trees to find food and avoid detection. Numbers have declined due to hunting and habitat loss.

zootycoon.com Description
The spectacled bear is a small South American bear with distinctive facial coloring that resembles a ring encircling each eye. Its present range extends from Bolivia to Colombia, where it is restricted to high, steep, rugged areas unsuitable for agriculture. Spectacled bears feed mostly on wild fruits (especially figs) and on leaves, small animals, insects, and succulent herbs and grasses. They often stay in the tops of trees for extended periods. They are rather vocal, trilling as they travel, and the young hum when relaxed. Spectacled bears are not a significant threat to humans, but they can do serious damage to agricultural crops. Killing for meat or to reduce crop damage takes a serious toll on spectacled bear populations.
