The Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) also known as the Laughing Hyena, is a large African mammal. It is an animal available for adoption in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon DS.
Description[]
Spotted Hyenas are the largest of the four species of hyena, measuring up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) in length and about 1 meter at the shoulder and weighing up to 82kg (180 pounds) with females being slightly larger than males. Despite resembling canines, spotted hyenas are feliforms that belong in the infraorder Viverroidea, which also contains mongooses.
Spotted hyenas are native to sub-Saharan Africa, but they may have originated in Asia and once ranged throughout Europe during the late Pleistocene. They live in hierarchical social groups called clans that can consist of up to 130 members, being matriarchal, high ranking females and their cubs dominate over males. Although commonly thought of as scavengers, using their powerful jaws to crush through bones, they are also capable hunters in their own right, having a higher success rate than lions.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The Spotted Hyena is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. It is not unlocked in freeform mode until September 1. It is used in the Carnivore Zoo Scenario.
The spotted hyena is a savannah animal that requires plenty of sand, savannah grass, and dirt terrain in its exhibit to keep it happy. It needs plenty of foliage and rocks, its favorite foliage being the Umbrella Thorn Acacia Tree.

Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game[]

The Spotted Hyena was a nominate species for Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game. It was part of the original vote used to determine the roster of the Additional Animal Pack, however it lost with only 177 votes (24.7% of votes cast). The spotted hyena had a second chance though during the bracket vote for the Additional Animal Pack, being pinned against the Chinese Giant Salamander in the first round, though ultimately lost the round with 187 votes vs the 257 the giant salamander received.
The spotted hyena would've been a Level 1 animal in the Savannah biome and classed as a Carnivore.
