The Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a mid-sized carnivorous mammal from Africa and Asia. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
The striped hyena is one of four species of hyena and one of the smaller members of the family. Adults typically weigh around 35kg (77lbs) and reach a shoulder-height of up to 80cm (31in), although it still retains the thick-set head, neck and torso common in other hyena species. Males are typically larger than females. The striped hyena features a distinctive thick coat with a long mane across its back, which grows thicker in winter.
The striped hyena is native to Northern Africa, but can also be found in Asia from the Middle East to the Indian subcontinent, making it the only extant hyena to live outside Africa. A primarily nocturnal animal, it lives alone or in pairs, sheltering in dens that they may dig themselves or have been previously abandoned. The striped hyena is primarily a scavenger and is capable of crushing and eating bones, but may occasionally catch and kill its own prey. It features prominently in Asian and Middle-Eastern folklore, but numbers are declining due to persecution.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The striped hyena is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the African Adventure expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a rating of 4 stars.
The striped hyena is a Desert animal, but will also tolerate grassland, savannah and scrub to a degree. They are extremely popular among guest. Females will not share their exhibit with other females and will fight and kill one another if the exhibit has more than one female, even when there are enough males for each female.
