The Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) is a mid-sized South American bird. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game.
Description[]
The Toco Toucan is the largest member of the toucan family, of which there are over forty species. It reaches a length of up to 56cm (22in) and can be identified by its black body and white chest and throat. Like all toucans, its most distinctive feature is its massive beak, which can be over 2cm in length and counts for about 50% of the bird's surface area. Despite its size, the beak is extremely lightweight and is extremely effective at controlling the bird's body heat, as well as for foraging.
The toco toucan is native to South America and, unusually for its family, lives in semi-open habitats such as savannah and dry forests. It primarily feeds on fruit, although it will take insects and young birds if given the chance. Toucan pairs will nest in cavities, usually in large trees, and raise up to four chicks during a season. Whilst most birds are threatened by deforestation, the toco toucan's preference for open habitats suggests that its range may increase as the forests are cut down.
